Finger Tap Test FAQ

What the numbers mean, how "your usual" gets worked out, and the one thing this app is emphatically not.

Is this a medical test?

No. Finger Tap Test is for general wellness and curiosity. It is not a medical device, and it does not diagnose, treat, or assess any health condition. Your tapping speed naturally varies from day to day, because of sleep, caffeine, mood, temperature, which finger you used, and plain randomness. If something about your movement genuinely worries you, talk to a doctor, not to an app.

Why won't it tell me how today compares?

Because it doesn't know your usual yet. The app needs at least three check-ins with the same hand before it will show you a comparison, with fewer than that, any "you're above average today" would be noise dressed up as a finding. Keep checking in and it appears.

What exactly is "your usual"?

A rolling baseline built from your most recent 20 check-ins with that hand, not your whole history. It moves with you, so a personal best from a year ago doesn't spend forever making today look bad. The comparison is always you versus you, never you versus anyone else.

What do Steadiness and Endurance mean?

Steadiness is how even your rhythm was: whether the gaps between taps were metronomic or ragged. Endurance is whether you held your pace for the full ten seconds or faded toward the end. Two people can tap the same number of times with completely different shapes, and those two readouts are the shape.

Why does it ask which hand I used?

Because your hands are different, and averaging them together would hide exactly what's interesting. Each hand builds its own baseline and its own trend line, so you can watch them separately, and against each other.

Where is my data stored?

On your phone, in the app. Nothing is uploaded, there's no account to make, and no server ever sees a check-in. Deleting the app deletes the history with it.

Does it read my Apple Health data?

No. Finger Tap Test doesn't ask for Health access and doesn't write anything to Health. The only data it has is the taps you gave it.

Does it show ads?

A single small banner. In regions that require it you'll see a consent prompt the first time, and you can change your choice from Settings → Manage Privacy Choices.

What is the "Allow tracking" prompt?

Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt. Decline it and nothing changes except that the banner shows less relevant ads. Your tapping data is never part of that, either way.

Do I need an account?

No account, no sign-up, no subscription. It's free and works offline.
